I designed, illustrated and printed a tarot deck inspired by Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865) by Lewis Carroll for the 18th-Annual Wonderland Award inspired by life and work of the author.
This tarot deck holds each character of the 22 Major Arcana cards as represented by characters of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll (1865). Each character holds meaning as one of the steps of the 22, exemplary and simultaneously the fundamental opposite of each cards’ archetype.
Funnily enough, there are about 22 characters in Carroll’s storybook, and 22 comparative identity groups in the traditional major arcana. Carroll’s story is wholly emblematic of whimsy and peculiarity, but fundamentally embodies the system of belief so defined by pagan spiritual systems. Fantasy in itself is the epitome of finding higher meaning in the story, and secondly in one’s own character; we travel with Alice through her world, beginning as a naïve fool and ending as a saver of a world. Whether they choose to escape or to triumph is found in logical nonsense. What story will the cards tell for you?
Winners of the award will be announced in late April.
